Loan Amount = Gold Weight × Purity Factor × Gold Rate × LTV %Purity Factor = Karats / 24. Eligible Loan Amount is computed using current RBI Loan-to-Value guidelines. EMI is calculated on the eligible loan amount using reducing-balance monthly amortization.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) mandates a strict Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio cap of 75% for gold loans. This means lenders can finance a maximum of 75% of the appraised value of the pledged gold ornaments. LTV limits are set to protect banks and NBFCs from gold price volatility. During high market fluctuations, lenders monitor the LTV, and if the gold value drops significantly, you may be asked to pay the margin difference to avoid collateral auction.
1. Compare rates and charges: NBFCs specialize in quick processing, but PSU banks usually offer much lower interest rates (7-10% p.a.). 2. Purity matters: Banks only accept gold with a purity of 18 Karats or higher. Stones, gems, and diamonds in ornaments are excluded from the weight during valuation. 3. Repayment options: Choose bullet repayment if you have seasonal income, or EMI options for steady cash flows. 4. Prepay when possible: Pledging gold exposes you to auction risks if you default; prepaying maintains safety.
Example 1: 50g of 22K gold pledged at ₹7,200/g rate. Valuation = 50 × (22/24) × 7,200 = ₹3,30,000. At 75% LTV, Eligible Loan Amount = ₹2,47,500. At 9% rate for 12 months → EMI = ₹21,638/month, Interest = ₹12,156. | Example 2: 20g of 18K gold pledged at ₹7,000/g rate. Valuation = 20 × (18/24) × 7,000 = ₹1,05,000. At 70% LTV, Eligible Loan = ₹73,500. At 10% rate for 6 months → EMI = ₹12,612/month. | Example 3: 100g of 24K gold bars pledged at ₹7,200/g. Valuation = ₹7,20,000. At 75% LTV, Loan = ₹5,40,000. At 8.5% rate for 24 months → EMI = ₹24,537/month.
